While most major car insurance companies offer the same kind of coverage, that doesn’t mean they are all the same.
How Car Insurance Works
Almost every state in the United States requires that drivers maintain some level of car insurance. In the states that do not mandate drivers carry car insurance; they still require that drivers maintain financial responsibility. This means that you would need to have a lot of money to pay for damages if you elect not to carry car insurance in the states of Wisconsin and New Hampshire. The other 48 states as well as Washington DC do have mandatory car insurance laws.
While most major car insurance companies offer the same kind of coverage, that doesn’t mean they are all the same. For example, not every major car insurance company offers the same kind of discounts, so you could lower your cost of car insurance substantially by choosing the right company. Also, some car insurance companies base your premiums on your credit worthiness, so if you have less than stellar credit, you may want to make sure you choose an insurance company that doesn’t run your credit report.
